Rock of Ages is a popular Christian hymn written by the Reverend Augustus Toplady in 1763 and first published in The Gospel Magazine in 1775. Rock of Ages refers to Jesus. It is a play on words, making a connection between the smitten rock from Exodus ("You shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink." - Exodus 17:6) and the Crucifixion of Christ ("One of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once their came out blood and water." - John 19:34). As the prophet Isaiah wrote, "Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock" (Isaiah 26:4).
